7 Must-Try Cafes Around the University of Santo Tomas

University of Santo Tomas (UST) is the oldest university in Asia. It was founded by the third Archbishop of Manila, Archbishop Miguel de Benavides. It was established in April 28, 1611 and is located in Manila, Philippines. In a short while, University of Santo Tomas ranks 5th among all the best universities in the Philippines; passionately giving excellence in education especially in the fields of Philosophies and Sciences. However, UST is not only known for its education and history, but the abundance of restaurants and cafes around its area.

If you are currently finding a place to relax or study, cafe would be the perfect place for you. There's nothing better than a cup of coffee! Wake up and experience the real world! Remember that sleep is a symptom of caffeine deprivation.

1. Bean Belt Coffee

Bean Belt Coffee is one of the students' favorite places for studying and reading. Shhhh.... Make sure not to be too loud when you visit this place. Majority of the customers here hate noises, especially when it is the university's exam week. They have a very friendly service and a pleasant ambiance. Their food quality is above average, but their menu only covers small portions of choices. Their prices are reasonable, but I can tell you that they're not that cheap. A single person may spend around 200-300 pesos, which includes a meal and a drink, per visit. The place also accepts reservations. It is best for studying and business meetings. If you are an introvert who loves serenity, then this is a perfect place for you.

2. Amsterdam Dutch Coffee

Amsterdam Dutch Coffee is not that famous for UST students, but is a good place to try out. This is located near Bean Belt. Their food quality is fine and they have a small range of choices in the menu. Their service is average and the environment is quite narrow for the crowd, but is sure a tidy place. Amsterdam is just a small cafe and only offers a small amount of seats for the customers. Hurry and grab your seat earlier before someone else steals the last one!

3. Urban HUB Coffee

Urban HUB Coffee is newly constructed beside the Pacific Suites condominium along the corner of P. Noval and Dapitan Street. Their food quality is excellent and their service is averagely good, but their food are costly. A single person might spend 300 - 400 pesos per visit. Before you visit this cafe, always make sure to keep a pocketful of cash. They have a very lively and colorful atmosphere, and is a good place for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Although, this is not the perfect place for studying in mornings, but is the perfect one in the evening. If it's until two AM an you are a night-owl, then why not visit it by midnight? The cafe openly welcomes you and never do expect the place to have no customer by midnight. You will still have much with you for there are lots of night-owl students living nearby.

4. Cafe KIVHAN Coffee

Cafe KIVHAN Coffee is one of the most classic cafes around UST and does offer a reasonable price for their amazing food quality. One that I've tried best in the cafe is the Mint Latte. This cafe is perfect for studying and relaxing in all parts of the day. Let it be morning, afternoon, and evening, the indoor ambiance makes you forget what lies outside the cafe. They have a woody calming furniture-style, which makes the coffee aura even more defined. Cafe KIVHAN is also a perfect place for the hipsters, having varieties of coffee blends on their menu, and offers salads or sandwiches rather than rice meals. I personally go to this cafe as my relaxing place when the educational and political system eats me down! In times your mind screams statics, Cafe KIVHAN is my greatest choice. Let it be yours too!

5. Cafe-UK

Cafe-UK is second from the best cafes (next to Starbucks Coffee) around UST. Its owner / manager really is British and I have personally met her. They have a very friendly staff and an excellent quality of food. I warn you, expect amounts of expenses when you visit this cafe. Dependent on the price of the food, I find it reasonable to buy such from the kind of environment it gives. Its furniture-style really makes you feel like you are in the UK. Imagine being with Harry and Hermione while you are in Manila. Who gets another choice for that? Cafe-UK has two branches: Dapitan and Padre Noval Street. No doubt this be one of the best choices around UST; having two branches with large portions of seats, but there barely has a vacant one. They'll be glad for you to visit!

6. Starbucks Coffee

Speak no more, Starbucks Coffee has been the first cafe choice when it comes to majority of the Filipinos. The visibility of Starbucks' passion for different brews of coffee is clearer than a newly wiped glass. From all directions, never there'll be a single angle without seeing anything related to coffee. The smell of the coffee bean inside the cafe is so natural and fresh. Starbucks honestly has one of the best customer services among all cafes; and not only cafes, but be it part of other restaurants too. The quality of their coffee does not go beyond being less than an Arabica. Starbucks Coffee has four branches around UST (Dapitan/UST Carpark/Padre Noval/Espana), but surprisingly has no seats vacant from all branches. Starbucks is best visited in all parts of the day. It is best for all introverts and extroverts, for business meetings and family outings, romantic dating, and group hangout. You can even get yourself a study or write a blog while drinking some Flat White (Ristretto Bianco) while sitting at one corner of Starbucks. Well, it seems that I need no recommendation for you to be there. Let no day pass for the class - the classic Starbucks.

7. Coffee Avenue

Coffee Avenue is located at UST Carpark. It serves wide range of dishes, coffees/frappes, and imported teas. Its dishes cover American, European, and Filipino recipes. Let it be burgers, sandwiches, salads, and rice meals, all of them satisfy your cravings from bacon to veggies. If you want a rice meal that would feed your tummy without risking your health, you may order black rice from them. Although some drinks do not reach the standard for quality. The staffs are friendly and casual. The environment is quite tidy, but too narrow for the seats. I don't know if I would call myself a human or a sardine when entering this cafe by lunchtime. If you prefer a tummy-filling cafe and thinking more about eating than drinking, then this is a good choice for you!
